Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park is a beautiful and diverse protected area in northern Tanzania, located close to Arusha city and offering spectacular views of Mount Meru. Established in 1960, the park covers about 552 square kilometres and features a remarkable variety of landscapes, including montane forests, open savannah, acacia woodlands, wetlands, and alpine vegetation around Mount Meru. Its main attractions include the slopes of Mount Meru, the scenic Momella Lakes, Ngurdoto Crater, and lush forest areas rich in wildlife.

Despite its relatively small size, Arusha National Park supports a wide range of animals. Visitors may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, hippos, zebras, warthogs, bushbucks, and several species of monkeys, including the black-and-white colobus monkey. Leopards are present but rarely seen. The Momella Lakes provide excellent opportunities for wildlife and bird viewing, while the surrounding forests offer a chance to observe primates moving through the trees.

With more than 400 recorded bird species, Arusha National Park is also an excellent destination for birdwatchers. Its location just a short drive from Arusha makes it ideal for a day safari, while its diverse scenery and proximity to Mount Meru make it a popular addition to longer northern Tanzania safari itineraries. The park can also be combined with a Mount Meru trek or visits to other famous destinations such as Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti.

When is the best time to visit Arusha National Park

The best time to visit Arusha National Park is generally from June to October, when the weather is dry, wildlife viewing is easier, and the clear skies provide beautiful views of Mount Meru. January to February is also a good time to visit, with warm weather, green landscapes, and good opportunities for wildlife and bird watching. The rainy seasons from March to May and November to December bring fewer visitors and lush scenery, making them suitable for travelers who prefer a quieter experience. Overall, Arusha National Park can be visited throughout the year, but June to October offers some of the best conditions for game drives, walking safaris, bird watching, and enjoying the park’s scenic landscapes.
