Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s most remarkable natural attractions and the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. It was formed when a massive volcano collapsed millions of years ago, creating a vast natural enclosure measuring about 20 kilometres across and reaching depths of up to 600 metres. The crater floor covers approximately 260 square kilometres and supports an extraordinary concentration of wildlife, making it one of the finest places in Tanzania for game viewing.

The crater’s unique landscape includes open grasslands, forests, swamps, seasonal wetlands, and Lake Magadi, a shallow alkaline lake that attracts numerous animals and birds. The fertile volcanic soils and permanent water sources provide excellent conditions for wildlife throughout the year. Visitors may encounter lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, cheetahs, and large numbers of other animals. Ngorongoro is also one of the best places in Tanzania to search for the endangered black rhinoceros.

Rising to more than 2,200 metres above sea level, the crater rim offers spectacular views across the vast caldera below. The high elevation creates a cooler climate, with mist and clouds often surrounding the rim, particularly in the mornings. The combination of dramatic scenery, abundant wildlife, and the extraordinary geological history of the crater makes Ngorongoro a unique safari destination and an important part of Tanzania’s northern safari circuit.
