Tour Details
The Lemosho -Northern Circuit route is highly preferred routes due to its low traffic, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. This route starts off from the western side of the mountain. From there, the first two days are spent trekking in the lush rainforest, heath and moorland zone across the rock-fields of ancient lavas on the beautiful plains of the Shira Plateau. The summit can be attempted in a minimum of 7 days but 8 days is preferable for better acclimatization and summit success. The Lemosho – Northern Circuit joins the Rongai route at Third Cave Camp and then follows that route through the north circuit to Uhuru peak before descending via Mweka gate.
LET'S Trip
TOGETHER
You will be picked up from the Airport (JRO) and transferred to your hotel in Moshi, where you will meet your mountain guide and office representative for meet & greetings followed by your pre trek briefing and kit check. This day, our team will be answering any question about your upcoming adventure to make sure everyone is ready to go!
You will depart at 08:00 am for our transfer to Londorossi gate, where we complete park formalities, before engaging on another short transfer to The Glades; where our trek will start. We begin our steady ascend through thick and beautiful rainforest with the terrain going up and down which is a great way to get our bodies acclimatized! Night Camp: Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp (2,780m/ 9,120 ft).
- Altitude Change: ↑680 m/ 2,230ft
- Trekking Distance/ Time: 7 km/ 4.3 miles (5-6 hr)
We leave our Camp in the morning to push on with our ascend. We will walk through the narrow path in a steep terrain heading on to heather and moorland zone. It’s a slow hike with plenty of rests and enough time to acclimatize. We will have short rests and breaks before facing a steep climb on our way to reaching Shira Ridge with a view of our Camp, Shira Camp 1. Night Camp: Shira Camp 1 (3,500m/ 11,480 ft).
- Altitude Change: ↑ 720m/ 2,362 ft
- Trekking Distance/ Time: 8 km/ 5 miles (4-5 hr)
Today, we will have the chance to view the Northern ice fields from the western side of the mountain with some unusual views of Kibo. The terrain during our steady climb will change from the moorland of the Shira Plateau to the broad upland desert beneath the Lent Hills with great panoramic views. Our camp is close to Moir Hut (4175m). In the afternoon we do an acclimatization walk to the lower part of the Lent Hills group, to an altitude of 4300m. Night Camp: Moir Hut Camp (4,175 m/ 13,697ft)
- Altitude Change: ↑ 675m/ 2,214 ft
- Trekking Distance/ Time: 10 km/ 6.2 miles (5-6 hr)
We walk heading North to Moir Valley, climbing to the summit of Little Lent Hills at 4,375m before striking eastwards around the Northern Circuit Trail to finish our day! Night Camp: Buffalo Camp also known as Pofu Camp (4,030 m/ 13,221 ft)

- Trekking Distance/ Time: 12 km/ 7.4 miles (5-6 hr)
The day starts with a climb up heading east around the northern slopes to the Rongai Third Cave. The trek is shorter than the day before and by now you should be feeling well acclimatized to the altitude. You will arrive at our Camp just around mid-afternoon. Night Camp: Third Cave Camp (3,900 m/ 12,795 ft)
- Altitude Change: ↓130 m/ 426 ft

We begin a day with a steady incline up and over the Saddle which sits between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi Peak. We then continue walking south-west up to School Hut (4,800 meters). After arriving at School Hut you will be served an early dinner and then you should get some shut-eye as you will be awoken before midnight to start your summit attempt. Remember to prepare all your gear, including warm clothes, insulated water bottles, snacks, headlamp and camera before going to bed. Night Camp: School Hut Camp (4,715 m/ 15,470 ft)
- Altitude Change: ↑ 815m/ 2,674 ft
- Trekking Distance/ Time: 8 km/ 4.9 miles (4-5 hr)
Today we make our ascent to the summit at 5895m. It is a strenuous and long day, particularly with the high altitude and extreme cold, so we plan to make a midnight start. You will be awoken around 11:30 with hot tea and biscuits and will then begin the steep incline up the slopes of Kibo under the cover of darkness. Your first check-point is Hans Meyer Cave where you will take a short break.
At this time, the snow and scree are still frozen and we aim to be down before the top layer of scree becomes wet and slippery. The climb steepens as you approach Gilman’s Point (5,681 meters), which will be around 5-6 hours after departing School Hut. Take a moment to enjoy the approaching dawn and incredible view out and across to Mawenzi Peak, but remember you still have 1-2 hours trekking to reach Uhuru Peak so dig deep for the energy. The slope flattens as you head west around the crater rim and you should arrive at the summit at or just after sunrise. Your stay here will be brief so get as many pictures as you can of the incredible views and surrounding glaciers.
Our path zigzags up the scree and after passing Rebmann Glacier, we reach Stella Point (5750m) on the crater rim. Although at times you may be able to walk for only 10 paces before you have to stop and rest, there is no doubt that it is all worth it when you reach the top. From Stella Point we continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5895m. Then we descend, down the scree to Barafu camp for a rest and then down to the Millennium camp (3790m). Night Camp: Millennium Camp (3,790m/ 12,234 ft).

Lunch will be served either at Mweka gate or at your hotel in Moshi. We take the vehicle transfer back to our Lodge in Moshi for a well-deserved hot shower or cool soak in the pool!
